The AC62 catamaran was dropped in favor of a new “America’s Cup Class” foiling wing sail catamaran. Smaller than the AC62, the new class promises to deliver exciting racing at a much lower cost.

Videos

Compare the two videos on this page. You’ll see that Oracle Team USA and Artemis Racing are already well advanced in mastering crew work. In the 2013 America’s Cup, Oracle was still learning to foil gybe their AC72 in the weeks before the America’s Cup Match began. In the early races, their tacks were slow and inefficient, compared to Team New Zealand. The second video shows the advantages of making major modifications to the AC45. While Luna Rossa (who has since withdrawn) and Ben Ainslie Racing added foiling daggerboards to their AC45s, they did not initially have cockpits, wheel steering, grinding pedestals and sophisticated foil and wing control systems like Oracle and Artemis. In the video below, you can see that the deck configurations allow Oracle and Artemis to choreograph the maneouvers they will do in their America’s Cup Class race boats.

Learning to tack an AC72 in the 2013 America’s Cup

A major reason for Oracle’s comeback in San Francisco was how they learned “to roll tack” their AC72 by watching how Team New Zealand did it. This video shows their problems in the early races and their dramatically improved technique later in the match.

Developing the “Playbook” in the AC45x Test Boats

Oracle and Artemis Racing have been drilling crew work with foiling gybes and roll tacks in their AC45x test boats. Artemis has attempted foiling tacks. Oracle has mastered the mark rounding that they executed so poorly in Race 4, shown in the other video.
