Team Australia began sailing their AC45 on Sydney Harbor, training with Oracle Team USA. CEO Iain Murray announced that their skipper will be Mat Belcher, gold medalist in the 470 at the 2012 London Olympics. Belcher will be sailing against another Australian gold medalist from London – Tom Slingsby, Laser gold medalist, is helming the OTUSA AC45 in the training races in Sydney. The two teams will train with each other in Sydney through June.

Prada announces €50 million for Luna Rossa’s 5th America’s Cup challenge

Italian fashion house Prada has committed €50 million to sponsor Luna Rossa’s challenge for the America’s Cup. For 2014 they have budgeted up to €25 million, although with no America’s Cup  World Series racing and with less than 10 months remaining, it seems unlikely they will spend that much. Annual budgets for the rest of the campaign are capped at €24 million in 2015, €9 million in 2016 and €4.5 million in 2017. Total spending will not exceed €50 million.

Luna Rossa’s campaigns in 2000, 2003 and 2007 were funded by Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli personally. The 2013 campaign was the first time that the sponsorship came directly from the company.

More ideas for the America’s Cup design rule

The Class Rule for the next America’s Cup yachts is due out this month – March 2014

While we are waiting for the rule to be announced, we have heard some ideas that have been floated for  the Class Rule:

From Russell Coutts, CEO Oracle Team USA

  • An overriding theme is an effort to reduce costs and increase media exposure, so that teams can provide a better return to their sponsors for significantly less money than was required last time.

From Pete Melvin, of Morelli & Melvin, leading the rule-writing process

  • Confirmed the concept of foiling, wingsail catamaran
  • Include safety considerations
  • Reduce the cost of the entire campaign, meaning…
  • Fewer sailors
  • Fewer personnel involved in design and logistics
  • Reduced construction cost
  • Write the rule so it is easier to measure the boats and to administer
  • Parts of the wing could be one design
  • Make things one design if they absorb lots of design resource for little performance gain

From Nathan Outteridge, helmsman, Artemis Racing

  • Make the wing small enough so that the gennaker is needed for downwind foiling – show the sailors hoisting, gybing and dropping sails. The sailors should be seen doing more than grinding.
  • Have a real job for the bowman.
  • Allow adjustable elevators on rudders for safety and to enable upwind foiling.

From Paul Bieker of Oracle Team USA

  • We want to foil upwind in 12 knots of breeze and downwind in 8 knots.

From Tom Slingsby, Oracle Team USA strategist

  • It has to be sailed in the most high performance, most spectacular boats, and foiling is the only way to do that properly.
  • You don’t want any computer automated devices. You don’t want to make foiling easy.
  • The load on the mainsheet for a soft sail would be so much higher than with a wing – the wingsail is definitely the way to go.

Oracle Team USA training in Sydney through June 2014

Oracle Team USA training in Sydney

Oracle Team USA has shipped one of their AC45 catamarans to Sydney in order to train with Team Australia. OTUSA has not revealed any plans to sail in the Extreme Sailing Series. It appears they plan to train in AC45s in preparation for America’s Cup World Series racing that is planned to begin in 2015. Team Australia will sail in the Extreme Sailing Series as GAC Pindar.

In addition to Team Australia, other potential America’s Cup challengers who are sailing in the Extreme Sailing Series include Emirates Team New Zealand, Team France (as Groupama), Ben Ainslie Racing (as J.P. Morgan), Gazprom Team Russia.

OTUSA and Luna Rossa are the only America’s Cup teams that have not announced plans to sail in the Extreme Sailing Series.

Artemis Racing adds to team for 35th America’s Cup

CHRISTIAN KAMP
CHRISTIAN KAMP

Sailing Team

Christian Kamp has joined Artemis Racing as trimmer. Christian was the 2010 Danish sailor of the year. He has won three world championships, over 20 Grade 1 Match Racing titles and sailed on board Team Aqua on the RC44 circuit, winning the season championship for the last three years.

Shore Team

Former Oracle Team USA team member Richard Kent will lead the Artemis Electronics unit. Kent knows the America’s Cup well, competing in the last four. He was with Oracle for their 2010 win in the 33rd America’s Cup and for their successful defense, last year in San Francsico. He also ran the electronics departments for winning Volvo Ocean Race teams ABN AMRO (2006/2007) and Ericsson Racing (2008/2009).

Chay McIntosh will once again lead the shore team for Artemis. Chay won the 29th and 30th America’s Cups with Team New Zealand in 1995 and 2000, and the 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race with Ericsson Racing.
