ARTIST JAMIE MEDLIN’S PAINTING OF THE 34TH AMERICA’S CUP

Christie’s Auction of Maritime Art – Wednesday 12 November 2014

Curators at Christie’s have said,  “Jamie Medlin is one of the finest living marine artists, whose work has garnered international recognition.  His near photographic attention to detail is perfectly suited to the  yachts he depicts, evoking memories of the golden age of yachting, which when combined with the colour and vibrancy of his paintings makes these works modern masterpieces.”

After many years of continued success with Christie’s, the worldwide exposure brought Medlin to a large and discerning audience. He now has a long waiting list, with commissions for some of the biggest names in yachting.

ETNZ Bosses Give Video Update

team-new-zealand-bosses

Team New Zealand bosses Grant Dalton and Kevin Shoebridge talk about what the team learned from the 2013 America’s Cup and how their plans are developing for the 2017 contest. At 1:45 into Part 1, Grant Dalton talks about the “lay day controversy” during the 2013 America’s Cup. He explains that Oracle also wanted to have a lay day on Monday 16 September 2014, so regardless of what ETNZ requested, there would not have been any racing on that day.

Dalton and Kevin Shoebridge talk about how Peter Burling and Blair Tuke bring young talent to the sailing team. They also talk about new recruits in the design team. Watch closely at 3:34 into Part 1. You’ll see mechanical engineer Neil Wilkinson, who was recruited to the ETNZ design team from Oracle. Neil helped develop the foil control system that prompted Kiwi journalists to speculate about an automated system on board Oracle’s boat.

In Part 2, Grant Dalton talks about having “a great group of sponsors who are all loyal.” He mentions that contracts won’t be finalized until the venue is known, but he “can’t see why any of them would say ‘no’.”

Oracle’s Development Boat

AC Protocol allows “anything goes” boats based on AC45 hull shape

America's Cup wing step is aft of the main crossbeam

Note how the wing step is aft of the main crossbeam.

Start with AC45 hull shapes and add whatever you want

As long as the lower part of the hulls have the same shape as AC45 hulls, the designers can build whatever they want on top. In the Oracle renderings, we can see that they have designed flared hulls to accommodate cockpits, a grinding pedestal and wheel steering. They have added hydraulics for daggerboard control, an end plate under the wing, and what looks like a pod under the platform.

Why does this design show the wing stepped aft of the main crossbeam?

During AC34 Oracle made the slot in their wing bigger by changing the tab adjustment. This moved the center of effort aft, reducing the lee helm that had plagued them. The AC62 Class Rule does not permit a tab on the wing’s main element. Moving the mast position fore and aft will allow them to change the center of effort.

Bermuda Selected as Host for 2017 America’s Cup Match

America's Cup AC World Series racing will be held in Bermuda on the Great Sound.

CRUISE SHIPS WILL ADD TO BERMUDA’S HOTEL CAPACITY DURING THE AMERICA’S CUP.

Citing “a person close to the decision,” both the AP’s Bernie Wilson and the Wall Street Journal’s Stu Woo have reported that Bermuda has been selected as the site of the 2017 America’s Cup. The San Diego Union Tribune quoted San Diego Tourism Authority CEO Joe Terzi as confirming the rumor. In an interview in October, ACEA head Russell Coutts said the selection of a venue “will be decided mainly on commercial considerations.”

ACEA has called a press conference in New York on 2 December to announce the venue formally.

In July, Luna Rossa, Artemis Racing, Team France and Ben Ainslie Racing all declared that they would support either Bermuda or San Diego as the venue for the America’s Cup Match.

What about Emirates Team New Zealand?

On their Facebook page, ETNZ posted this update: The America’s Cup rumour mill is again in overdrive… so responding to unconfirmed reports that Bermuda had won the right to host the 35th America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton said the team had not been told of a decision.

“We have been invited to a press conference to be held at New York on December 2 when the announcement will be made. Until then it is only media speculation.

“San Diego and Bermuda are the only potential venues left in the race so the media has a 50/50 chance of being right.

“We have developed business cases for both venues and have been in communication with potential sponsors and supporters. We have been encouraged by the positive reception we have had.

“The team awaits the official announcement and will then assess the situation and closely examine the funding model.”

That is not a 100% confirmation that ETNZ will get their funding. Let’s hope they do – the America’s Cup without the Kiwis wouldn’t be the same!
