Is Ben Ainslie’s Budget Bigger than Oracle’s?

That’s what Ainslie said in a CNBC interview.

Interviewed on CNBC in late October 2014, Ben Ainslie indicated that his America’s Cup challenge has a bigger budget than Oracle Team USA’s. Once again confirming that his budget is £80 million – approximately $128 million – he also said about OTUSA, “I know that their budget next time around is under $100 million.” If the video does not play in your email system, you can see it here.

Bermuda Selected as AC Venue

San Diego Tourism Authority CEO confirms rumor

America's Cup Bermuda

Citing “a person close to the decision,” both the AP’s Bernie Wilson and the Wall Street Journal’s Stu Woo have reported that Bermuda has been selected as the site of the 2017 America’s Cup. The San Diego Union Tribune quoted San Diego Tourism Authority CEO Joe Terzi as confirming the rumor. In an interview in October, ACEA head Russell Coutts said the selection of a venue “will be decided mainly on commercial considerations.”  Read more here, including Emirates Team New Zealand’s reaction.

BAR Video: Foiling Gybe in AC45 – November 2014

At 10 seconds into this Ben Ainslie Racing video, watch the first foiling gybe in an AC45 that I have seen. Does anyone else have video of an AC45 completing a foiling gybe? Let me know!

BAR launched their AC45-X (experimental) on 22 October 2014.

Remember that America’s Cup World Series racing will be in one design foiling AC45’s and that the experimental AC45-X catamarans are not one design and will not race in the ACWS. In 2014, Artemis Racing, Luna Rossa and BAR have sailed AC45-X catamarans. Oracle has not sailed theirs in 2014, possibly to allow themselves to build experimental boats from scratch (maybe we should call them AC45-XX) – we’ve already seen some drawings.

America's Cup Loïck Peyron, single handing a boat

On 9 November 2014, Loïck Peyron crossed the finish line in Guadeloupe, 7 days and 15 hours after departing Saint Malo in Brittany. The maxi trimaran is longer, wider and has a taller mast than an AC72 catamaran and was originally built for a crew of 10.

Loïck is a member of the design team for Artemis Racing in their challenge for the 2017 America’s Cup.

Racing sailors know Bermuda as the finish of the 635 nautical mile Newport – Bermuda race, scheduled to run for the 50th time in June 2016. Could this race become the only race in the world linking two America’s Cup venues? We’ll find out when the venue for the 2017 America’s Cup is announced in December 2014. Bermuda remains as one of two contenders – San Diego is the other – to host the  America’s Cup Match in 2017.

Bermuda also hosts the Bermuda Gold Cup, the oldest one-design match racing event in the world, dating back to 1937. Current America’s Cup skippers who have won the Bermuda Gold Cup include Ben Ainslie (2009, 2010) and Jimmy Spithill (2005).  Russell Coutts holds a record seven titles.
