The pros sail the AC45 with a crew of five. The youth teams in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will sail with six. Either way, there is a lot of work to do on board. Boat handling is key – one mistake and your competition accelerates away from you. Only when you’ve mastered the maneuvers can you use strategy and tactics to win. And, guess what – with short courses and boundaries that force the boats back together, there are a lot of maneuvers to do. You can’t just “bang the corner” and hope for a favorable wind shift.
