Team Updates

Emirates Team New Zealand has retained Emirates Airlines as title sponsor and has re-signed sponsor Omega. ETNZ is giving tryouts to sailors from the two Kiwi teams in the 2013 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Head of Design Nick Holroyd has left the team, as have sailors Derek Saward, Winston Macfarlane and Jeremy Lomas.

Artemis Racing will build their base at Morgan’s Point and move to Bermuda by the end of 2015. They will also have a presence in the AC Village at Dockyard in 2017. They made the decision to move to Bermuda after their training camp on the Great Sound in May.

Ben Ainslie Racing is close to completion of their new base in Portsmouth, which will be their home for the next three AC cycles. They have an AC45X test boat, called T2 (test boat 2) in construction in the UK.

Team France is sponsored by Groupama for the 2015 AC World Series racing. They continue to look for sponsors for their full campaign. They took advantage of recent Protocol changes to delay the payment of the final $900,000 entry fee and the $1 million performance bond. Originally scheduled for 1 May, those payments are now split into four equal installments beginning 1 July.

Softbank Team Japan signed former ETNZ helmsman Dean Barker as skipper and CEO. They have recruited Chris Draper, former Luna Rossa helmsman.

Oracle Team USA completed their move to Bermuda in May, where they will be based all the way through the America’s Cup Match in 2017.

Promotional Tours
Tucker Thompson has been appointed TV and Public Host of the America’s Cup. He will give presentations in a yacht club tour, with the America’s Cup trophy. The yacht America will also be on tour, visiting ports on the North American West Coast in 2015, the East Coast in 2016 and finally in Bermuda in 2017.

Chinese Challenger?

Don’t be surprised if a Chinese challenge is announced soon:

  •  Title sponsor Louis Vuitton gets about one third of their sales from Chinese customers.
  • Chinese broadcaster CCTV has agreed to pay broadcast rights to deliver AC racing to 400 million Chinese households.
  • Softbank, sponsor of Team Japan, owns 32% of Chinese internet giant Ali Baba. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Ali Baba CEO Jack Ma are all close business associates.
  • ACEA officials have said another Asian team might challenge.

All these signs seem to point to a Chinese challenger.

America’s Cup veteran Dean Barker, 43, has been named CEO and skipper of Softbank Team Japan. Announced in late April, the team is funded by Japan’s richest man, Softbank boss Masayoshi Son. They will receive basic design assistance from Oracle Team USA. Barker aims to have the team fully independent by the end of 2015. They will probably establish their base directly in Bermuda.

Barker was in Bermuda in May and sailed on Oracle’s AC45x “Sport” with his former nemesis Jimmy Spithill. “Being on the 45 with the Oracle guys was fantastic. The boats are just fantastic for the size of the venue,” enthused Barker.

Kazuhiko Sofuku, known as “Fuku,” will be the team’s general manager. Fuku sailed with Japan’s America’s Cup challenge in Auckland in 2000.

The team will make their debut at the America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth in late July. Just as Ben Ainslie Racing relied on Oracle sailors in the America’s Cup World Series in 2012 and 2013, Softbank Team Japan is likely to have a few Oracle sailors on board in Portsmouth in July and Gothenburg in August. They are aiming to have the team fully independent and operational by the end of 2015.

America’s Cup Challenger – Japan’s Richest Man – Masayoshi Son

Update: 30 April 2015:  Team Japan has officially announced their challenge. Led by General Manager Kazuhiko Sofuku “Fuku” and sailing for Kansai Yacht Club. Fuku last raced with a Japanese team for the Cup 15 years ago as bowman for Nippon Challenge during the 1999/2000 Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series. A base level of technical assistance from ORACLE TEAM USA will be provided to Team Japan as it prepares for the 2015 America’s Cup World Series events.

The long-rumored Asian challenger will be sponsored by Softbank, led by Masayoshi Son, Japan’s richest man. Son has made multiple fortunes, betting correctly on internet and communications trends. He is extremely well connected. A daring entrepreneur and self-made man, he built a PC software distribution business in Japan before being one of the earliest investors in Yahoo.

Masayoshi Son later invested in Jack Ma’s Chinese internet company, Alibaba, which has become one of the most important internet companies in China and the world. In 2014 there were rumors that Larry Ellison had approached Ma about backing a Chinese America’s Cup challenger.

Masayoshi Son definitely “thinks different.” He persuaded Steve Jobs to give him exclusive distribution for the then-brand-new iPhone before he had even built a mobile communications company.
