The America’s Cup World Series Toulon will have a day of practice racing on Friday 9 September followed by two days of racing for points, on Saturday and Sunday. Coming late in the series, the racing will be especially important as the teams fight for the bonus points that will be awarded to the first and second place teams at the end of the full two year series.
Toulon has one of the best natural anchorages in the Mediterranean and is the home of the French navy, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the French nuclear submarine fleet. The Romans settled Toulon in the 2nd century BC and it has been an important naval base since Charles XII built the Tour Royale fort in 1514. Fans of the 2009 film Master and Commander remember that naval battles began near Toulon and that Captain Jack Aubrey was played by Russell C… (Crowe, not Coutts).
